2025-08-04 – Coquimbo Province – Rufous-collared Sparrow

In Chile, the Rufous-collared Sparrow (Zonotrichia capensis) is affectionately known as the chincol—a bird so common and approachable that it feels like part of daily life. You’ll see it almost everywhere: city plazas, gardens, farms, roadside scrub, and even up into the Andean foothills, usually hopping on the ground and popping up to a low perch to sing. With its crisp rufous “collar,” bold facial stripes, and bright, whistled song, the chincol often becomes the first “familiar” bird visitors recognize—then keep encountering across the country.
